This effect looks like tooled leather on a solid colored background and like wood burning on a wood pattern background. Please note that this tutorial is rather advanced and assumes you have a good overall knowledge of Paint Shop Pro. To create this side border graphic:

  1. Download and open the "mask.gif" file at the end of this page or some other black and white graphic that is suitable for this purpose. Bring the colors up to 16 million.
  2. Choose Masks|New|From Image (This Window, Source Luminance, Invert Mask Data checked), Masks|Save to Alpha Channel, Masks|Delete and don't merge with layer.
  3. Flood fill with your background color or a wood pattern.
  4. Add three new layers.
  5. Go to the layer above your fill and load the selection from the Alpha Channel.
  6. Apply the cutout filter Color: Black, Opacity 100%, Blur 2, Offset 1,1.
  7. Go to the next layer and apply the cutout filter again except for make the Blur 15 and the offset 2.
  8. Go to the top layer and apply a drop shadow Color: White (or a very light version of the background fill), Opacity 100%, Blur 1, Offset 1,1.
  9. Play with the opacity sliders on the blur and shadow layers until you get the look that looks good to you.
  10. Merge all the layers and apply the Buttonize effect with the background color the color of your fill, Height 0, Width 10, Opacity 100%, Transparent Edge selected.
  11. Crop your graphic dropping down 1-2 pixels from the top and stopping 1-2 pixels from the bottom (this eliminates the slight streak across the top and bottom edge that is unavoidable).
  12. Add a right border of at least 1,000 pixels, any color you like.
  13. Save as a gif.

Following is the mask for this sidebar graphic and two examples of the different look this technique can produce.
